How to get fit this spring!

It finally happened. I stepped outside for my morning workout routine and I heard birds chirping. Birds! In Northern Michigan, that’s a big deal! Spring is in the air and summer will be here before you know it! If you are like most people, then you may have gained some weight over the long and dark winter…but fear not! I have some ideas to get you back on track before beach time arrives!

#1- Get outside more! So simple, but so important. Just moving or walking a bit more everyday will help you lose some weight. Plus, getting outside for at least 20 minutes a day has huge psychological benefits as well, like improved mood, better focus, and more energy. Yes, it sounds weird but expending energy via a short walk at lunch can actually GIVE you energy! Especially on a sunny day, make it a point to get outside for at least 20 minutes.

#2 – Join a sports team/group. One of the most important things you need in order to be successful in the long run is accountability. Joining a league for ultimate Frisbee, rugby, golf, baseball, or something else like martial arts, will not only help you get some additional exercise, but you’ll be making new friends and be part of team. It’s easy to not go to the gym after a long day of work if you usually go alone, but you’re much less likely to skip out if you know your “team” is expecting you. Find a group activity that interests you and start doing it.

#3 – Enjoy natures bounty. Spring time means plenty of fresh produce is available. One of the best ways to lose some weight, and just be generally more healthy, is to eat more natural foods, like fresh veggies and fruit (preferably local produce) and rely less on processes foods. You don’t have to traverse to the farmers market every weekend (although that’s fun!), as your local supermarket should have a good selection. Try something new and fresh. One of the easiest ways to get healthy without too much restriction is to allow yourself to eat what you want, but you HAVE to make it at home. Not only will you improve your cooking skills, but it will (most likely) be healthier than going out to eat. Fresh asparagus for an omelette?? Yes please!

#4 – “Spring Clean” your life. Spring is a great time to not only clean your house, but your personal life as well. Take a weekend and really look at your weekly schedule. See anything that eats up time and isn’t worth it? Cut it out. Maybe it’s the staying up late on a Wednesday which leaves you drained for Thursday and you miss a workout. Maybe it’s trying to do way too much in a day and you never get it all done so you feel overwhelmed or like a failure. Maybe you never actually planned a week out! Whatever the case may be, take a weekend and really get a feel for what you spend your time and energy on and compare it to what is important and beneficial to your goals.

I hope this short post gives you some great ideas and motivation to get the most out of this Spring. Remember to enjoy life. It’s short. Thanks for reading, and DFQ!
